Character descriptions are taken from the original proposal used to raise finance.

Michelle Davis (Clea Smith)

She is the responsible voice of reason amongst her friends.  Normally quiet and coy but she is known to have a wicked temper and a cheeky effervescent sense of humour.  She’s from a stable background, stable family with stable grades and has a stable job at the travel agents but for the first time in her life is faced with uncertainty after breaking up with her long term boyfriend boyfriend Gary.  Twenty one years old and single for the first time in her adult life she faces life with a sense of trepidation and excitement.

Becky McKenzie (Cath Sampson)

She’s the youngest of the three and is seemingly oblivious to her own sexuality and the sensuality that she exudes.  If fun, giggles and laughter had a name it would be Becky.  Her naivety and ignorance of the effect she has on the trail of boys in her wake is a constant source of amusement to the girls.  She comes from a small northern town and when she arrived at Sussex Uni she had a massive culture shock faced with the bright lights and fast night life of Brighton.  Now her life is a constant battle between her studies and clubbing but her conscience is occasionally stirred by phone-calls from Gavin, her boyfriend back home.  Life is one big rip-tide for Becky... and secretly she has a crush on Gary.

Vicky Stevens (Lara Clancy)

She is Michelle’s best friend and flatmate, is extremely intelligent but for reasons known only to herself has ‘opted out’.  Sardonic and a slave to daytime television Vicky isn’t afraid of telling it how it is, but is unable to see the obvious solution to her own difficulties.  Her principle problem being the social ‘drop’ boyfriend Colin, who she is inexplicably in love with, he is more of a rat than the pet rodent she keeps in her room.  Her parent frequently phone and Vicky alters the truth regarding her progress towards marriage and wealth.

Gary Browning (Paul Vaughan Evans)

He is a talented comic-book artist, earnest, honest, unrelentingly cheerful but totally heart-broken about splitting up with Michelle.  24 and single for the first time since he was 18 he’s learning that it’s rough out there for the modern man especially for one that has no idea about modern girls.  However, he’s willing to give it his best shot but secretly he’s always scheming how to win Michelle back.  You’d think Gary would do well with women but he thinks to much, over-intellectualizes and is to aware of his feelings to just relax and ‘roll with it’, so he usually messes up.  Despite his deep feelings for Michelle, he has a crush on Becky.

Craig Todd (Andy Crabb)

Gary’s co-author & best friend. 26 years old and a veteran of many a girlfriend.  He’s been there, done that and has a one-liner to sum it up.  Despite his blase’ and ‘matey’ outward appearance, he’s a true friend and guided Gary through the emotional minefield of breaking up with Michelle and now points Gary towards new female targets.  Personally though, commitment is the last thing in his vocabulary but you can’t help but think that there’s a secret lurking there somewhere, he’s falling in love with Melanie!

Michael Powell (Charlie Watts)

A good natured, mature, twenty five year old young executive.  A steady income, a steady job and a steady interest in Michelle.  But the routine bores him and he has ambitions.  In many ways he is similar to Gary, recovering from a broken heart as his former fiance, Polly, married his former best friend.  But Michael is on top of it, or that’s what he’d have everyone believe, he’s just not good at verbalising or communicating his true feelings.

Paul Jones (Simon Paul)

A brash and self-confident ‘lad’ is Michael’s flatmate.  They have known each other so long now that they are unable to say a serious word to each other.  Paul is foot loose, fancy free, flash with the cash and if it’s in a skirt it’s a target.  Football, lager and women are his hobbies and his ambition is to meet the Swedish Bikini team before he dies.  Rather obviously he is always around Becky.  Insensitive may be his middle name but lovable is his surname.

Colin (Paul Maddocks)

He’s hardly ever around as he is usually with ‘the guys’.  He is slacked out, drop out, completely underserving of Vicky’s bizarre devotion.  A hard day for him is having to buy his own Rizzla’s.  Equally bizarre is the attraction Colin apparently has to other women particularly a grunge chick Tara, who is often seen in his company.  His only contribution to conversation seems to be to ask for a cigarette or to offer a forth dimensional vision of a situation; but when he gets those bongos going he’s everyone’s groovy friend.

Karen (Kate Davis)

A co-worker of Michelle, a real ‘Brighton’ girl, inexplicably attracted to blokes with beer bellies who treat her badly.  Her foot lives in her mouth as she has a solution to everything, an answer for all and absolutely no idea at all about the real world.

Carly (Daisy Beaumont)

The ex-flatmate and one time best friend of Vicky until they fell out over Colin.  Colin and Carly had a brief affair but Vicky proportioned the entire blame onto Carly.  Vicky had told her to ‘get a life’ as an insult but Carly took it as an instruction, moved out and joined the V.S.O to start teaching English in Africa.  Is friendship stronger than boyfriend trouble?

Neil (Charlie Allen)

A vague friend of the gang, but he has a crush on Becky and he just won’t ‘leave it’ - until he takes matters into his own hands, he steals Gary’s old flat key, breaks into the girls house and leaves flowers for which Gary gets the blame.  Neil then starts threatening Gary and stalking Becky, culminating in his attempted rape of her.  Not a nice bloke really.

Melanie (Teresa Lam)

A friend of Michelle’s at her birthday party who meets Craig.  After he successfully guesses her name she goes out on a date with him, only to be witness to Michelle’s first date with Michael.  Watching Craig struggle with his conscious makes her fall for him, and Craig too falls for her beautiful smile.  Everyone finds love.

Mary (Shelley Miranda Barrett)

A Welsh minx barmaid who befriends the broken hearted Gary.  Will he realize that there are other girls other than Michelle who might be more suited to his quirky charm?  Mary doesn’t give anything away but isn’t afraid to flirt.

Daz (Darren Morgan)

A University chum of Becky!  He fancies her but unfortunately despite his crazy dancing and likeable persona, he just isn’t her type.  he gets beaten up by Neil in the Zap Club toilets and stays well away from Becky, only to finally witness Becky getting back together with her childhood boyfriend Gavin.

Gavin (Jonathan Glendening)

(But voiced by Stephen Haywood), a voice on the ansaphone, Becky’s conscience.  Gavin is Becky’s childhood boyfriend that she left in the north when she came to University in Brighton.  He obviously still holds a torch for her, but for Becky it’s out of sight, out of mind but when she hears those messages life becomes more complicated.  However, she does look at the necklace he gave her later in the film.

Travel Agency Manager (Mark Little)

Pompous & stressed Michelle’s boss is a grade one arse!  He really doesn’t want to lose a reliable and hardworking girl like Michelle and will do his best to keep her there!

Vicky’s Parents

Vicky’s parents are the biggest, scariest monsters in the universe, well, according to Vicky.  They are rich and would never understand their daughter’s unwillingness to join the real world but fortunately for Vicky, they never visit and Vicky can continue to weave her telephone fantasy of a successful career.
