Summer Rain is truly a Brighton film, made by a Brighton film maker in his home town, with a ‘mostly’ Brighton cast and crew - the finishing touch to a film about Brighton?  A soundtrack provided by Brighton bands of course!

Jonathan advertised in his local papers that he wanted music submitted to him for his ‘local film’. 1000’s of CD’s and cassette tapes came through his door and with Brian Grey (the composer of the score to Jonathan’s short film ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci’, they waded through the many boxes of music.  Jonathan noted that although people now had the ‘technology to make music in their bedrooms, they didn’t necessarily have the musical talent.  A lot of what we were recieving was well recorded rubbish.”

Jonathan started out listening to each and every submission beginning to end, “to be fair to the artist”, but soon due to sheer volume and variable quality it was reduced to the first ten seconds when the decision was made to press ‘stop’ or keep listening.  Thankfully Brian Grey kept listening and the shortlists were made.

Even though Jonathan and Brian knew what music they wanted in the film, the film itself often had other ideas and music that had got a thumbs up, contractual agreements and smiles all round... just wouldn’t fit the film.  Music from artists such as Clearlake and Angelique Dolonze were clear favourites that had to be rejected because the film couldn’t provide them with a natural slot.

However, some music did fit - ESSELLE - provided three songs, ‘Feel The Pain’, ‘I’ll Be Your Bridge’ and what has become the anthem ‘Sisters in Love’.  Award winning CRAWL LIMBO had a staggering four songs accepted onto the soundtrack.

The final ballad of the film was written by J.D Smith, especially for the film - called quite simply ‘SUMMER RAIN’ - oddly the only submission to utilise the film’s title.  The soundtrack is a clear winner with fans of the film, and the independent recording artists of Brighton who contributed their music can be proud of their achievement; in providing ‘the soundtrack’ to the lives of the characters.
